One of the most common places that someone wants to see when they are touring a new house is the closet. Even when building a new home, a common conversation is a closet and its size. A Braun Research poll found that 97% of US realtors think closet space is more important to homeowners than storage space in the attic and basement.

There are so many options for walk-in closets that you can add to your home. You can make it just a basic design, or you can get creative with it. Depending on your budget for the closet, it can range from average to elaborate. The staff at Cavalier Builders can help you with your walk-in closet needs. Whether it’s designing it or building it, they can help.

Walk-In Closet Benefits

Walk-in closets can add so much to a master bedroom or even the additional bedrooms in a home. They have become something that is expected in homes these days, not having one is just unheard of anymore. There are some very real advantages to having a walk-in closet in your home. Here are the top ones:

 Supplies More Space

Closets in a home are something that can make or break them. That additional space to put things is precious and much needed. If you don’t have closet space available, you are going to continually have things piling up and feel like nothing has a designated home.

There are many people who prefer to change out their closets with available space. They will put away summer clothes in the winter and the same for winter clothes once the weather begins to heat up once more. You could have space to store those boxes on shelves instead of stacking them in a corner or shoving them beneath a bed

Gets Rid of Clutter

When you have a walk-in closet you are going to have more space to put things. Most closet upgrades come with more shelving and hanging racks. This is going to help eliminate the clutter because there are more areas to put your belongings. Clutter is something that will drive you crazy over time and can potentially become hazardous by causing you to trip or fall. With more space to keep things off of the floor and out of your walking path, you will feel better and move safer.

You can have space for all the extras in your closet that sometimes accumulate along the edges of the room. That clutter that is always in your way can be resolved with a walk-in closet. Some things like:

  • Shoes
  • Jewelry
  • Coats
  • Additional Storage Boxes
  • Hats
  • Belts

All of these items and more can be kept from crowding your floor and your home with the addition of a walk-in closet.

Increase The Value Of Your Home

If you don’t have a walk-in closet in your home and you are looking to sell, you may want to consider adding one. When you make minor upgrades and changes to your home before you sell, it could increase the value. A walk-in closet is a major selling point in a home, and you could be hurting yourself by not making these changes to sell your home.

Adds Security

Walk-in closets usually have plenty of space to add extra areas to them. Such as adding your jewelry box stand, a safe, or shoe racks. If you are a family that has guns, the gun safe can be kept securely hidden in there also. Having these items of security in a safe place and away from out in the open areas is important. This is especially true if you have small children in the home who might become curious and be harmed by them.

The majority of the time, there is a door leading to a walk-in closet, that you are able to add a lock to. Keeping items locked up in an area that you can control is important for the safety of your home and everyone in it, as well as your own peace of mind. It is an area that can be used as a hiding place in the event that you experience a break-in.

Beneficial Design Ideas For Your Walk In Closet

Despite the wide variety of walk-in closet designs on the market, the following are some of the most popular design elements worth considering.

Single Sided

Those who prefer or need a smaller space should choose this style. It features a small clearance space for dressing and only one wall for storing your things. The optimal dimensions for these walk-ins are 4 feet wide by 4 feet deep, with an additional 34 inches for clearance.

Double Sided

Medium-sized walk-in closets with double sides include storage sections along two walls separated by an open area. A dressing table or full-length mirror can be positioned on the end wall, while shelving or rails often cover the side walls. 6 feet wide by 4 feet long is the minimum size required for this type of walk-in closet.

A Wrap Around

To help maximize your storage space, a wrap-around closet is an excellent option. This closet usually takes the form of an L or a U shape. For storing your items, it utilizes the side and rear walls. The center section is used for changing, and one of the walls will have a door.

Depending on what configuration works best for the homeowner, these closets can have varying depths. However, 5 to 6 feet might be the optimal depth for practical use. While L-shaped closets must be at least 5 feet wide, U-shaped closets can be as large as 7 feet wide.

With A Peninsula

Since the closet is essentially divided in half to form two independent closets, this design calls for a large amount of space. It features a shared half-height storage unit to create the divide and is often seen in master bedrooms. A connecting door to your bedroom is a feature you should include.

The depth of these types of closets should be adjustable to accommodate different floor plans due to their space requirements. A peninsula closet must be 13 feet wide, at the very least.

With An Island

Out of all the walk-in closet designs, this one is the largest. It features a layout similar to a wrap-around or a double-sided with an island in its center for storage. To allow the island to fit easily with a 3-foot clearance on all sides, the island walk-in should be at least 14 feet by 14 feet.
