Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve

With over 1,200 acres of wetlands, the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve is a beautiful place with plenty of hiking trails and species of animals to look for and explore. Having been established in 1979, this reserve has over 40 years of almost completely untouched and unhunted land. Here, species have been able to flourish and thrive under the protection of the state of California.

Where Is The Reserve Located?

Taking up a majority of the southwest region of the state, the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve is located in Huntington and Orange county. Throughout the reserve, there are dozens of hiking trails to follow, picnic areas to enjoy, and species to keep an out for. The wetlands provide home to many species of birds, butterflies and other creatures. The Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve gives you the ability to explore the beautiful coast of Southern California.

What Is There To Do At The Reserve?

There are multiple parking lots that connect to four miles of hikeable trails and plenty of area without trails that you can explore. With dozens of picnic tables, you can sit and enjoy your meal after a long hike or while bird watching. Thiss reserve is a bird watchers paradise, as there are dozens of pieces of birds to photograph and record.  The Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve offers year round nature tours throughout the reserve. 

What To Do After You Visit The Reserve

After a trip to the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve, you can visit the Bolsa Chica State Beach for a quick dip in the water after a long hike. Down the street, you can grab a bite to eat at Seasalt Beachside Burger, a quaint little seaside restaurant with many options to chose from, including their infamous Brisket Cheese Fries.  Pets are not allowed at the reserve, but just down the street, there is a dog beach to let your furry friend play. You can spend time wearing out your pup by playing fetch, running or even swimming with them. If you want to travel a little further, you can go to the Long Beach City Beach in the Belmont district.
