Tips For Surviving a House Remodel

May 22, 2022

Remodeling your home can increase your home value.  It can allow you to make it more energy-efficient, by changing light fixtures, upgrading appliances, and better insulation, thus saving on your electric bill.  Remodeling your home can allow you to make additions or open up certain areas, therefore giving you more living space.

Expect The Unexpected

If you chose to stay in the home, the inconvenience of living there while remodeling could be a problem. You will not be able to use certain rooms and appliances during different times of the remodel. So, you will need to make plans accordingly.

You could have some setbacks and/or delays due to weather, things having to be ordered or on backorder, or running into defective issues. Some problems such as:

  • Mold
  • Bad Wiring
  • Unlevel Floors
  • Etc.

There could be messes to deal with, you might not be able to do laundry at certain times or cook at a certain time. Keep in mind that not everything will run according to schedule, be prepared for setbacks, and try to be flexible.

Reduce Stress When Doing a Whole Home Remodel

Give yourself extra time, if something goes over the time allotted just go with it. Make sure to overestimate your budget, always go with a little higher budget so you do not stress over money.  Budgeting is very important, how much money you will need is determined by exactly what remodeling you will be doing.

This is one of the areas in that many people make a mistake. The budget is set and they don’t leave room for unexpected costs or problems that arise. This adds stress to the entire process. To avoid that, go ahead and put some wiggle room in your budget upfront to be prepared for this type of situation.

Plan Child Care

There is a lot going on in your home when you are remodeling. If you have kids in your home, you should think about what they are going to do while the workers are in the home. Will they be better off with a babysitter or do you have somewhere for them to be during this process?

It might be a good idea to have a babysitter that your kids can stay with during the day while the work is being done. Obviously, there are exceptions that will need to be made. Not all remodels are done in a couple of days or a week. Even if you have pets, it might be a good idea to find a pet sitter or doggy daycare for them to attend while remodeling.

Do What’s Best For You

All in all, the best thing to do is be prepared. Whether it is to do with supplies, money, childcare, pets, or anything else, being prepared will help the process go a lot smoother. Everyone will have a way that works best for them, and it may not be what works for you.
