Eat In Kitchen Vs Dining Room: Kitchen Remodel Decisions

January 28, 2021

Kitchen remodels can be fun and exciting. Do not let yourself get overwhelmed by the small stuff. Some homeowners are opting to remodel their kitchen and change their styles. Do you currently have an eat-in kitchen and want a separate dining area? Or vice versa, do you have a dining area and wish you had an eat-in? When you are remodeling your kitchen this can be an important decision that you must make.

One of the first questions you should ask yourself is, how does your family eat dinner each night? Do you eat as a family and like to sit down and enjoy the meal as one? Does everyone just eat when they want and as they get home? This can help you decide which eating place may better suit your family.

Dining Rooms

Will you truly use your dining room? Some families choose to have a dining room to sit down and eat dinner at every night as one. Other families choose to keep it more formal and have to set it up just to look pretty and only use it for special meals. Oftentimes a dining room becomes a catch-all for items that have no place anywhere else in the home and you just kinda throw them there to get them out of the way.

If you have a large family that likes to sit down together and you have a tradition of relatives coming to visit regularly, your family may benefit from a dining room in your home. Dining rooms are typically large and can house many people to eat.

Dining rooms are normally located close to the kitchen but some homeowners find it a hassle to carry food and dishes back and forth when serving the family, this is often considered a drawback of a separate area.

Eat-In Kitchens

When you are remodeling your kitchen there are lots of things you need to decide on but the floorplan should be one of the first. If you are wanting an eat-in kitchen will you want a breakfast nook with built-in seating? Or simply a blank space where you can add a table and chairs?

A benefit of having an eat-in kitchen is the family can socialize while cooking, or if everyone in your family seems to have a different schedule and seems to eat on shifts it makes it easier on them. Eat-in kitchens are often small and designed for small and average size families to enjoy.

Eat-In kitchens are very convenient but some homeowners find it hard to relax when they can see the mess that is made from cooking in the kitchen. All the dirty pots and pans sitting on the stove makes them feel as if they have to hurry and eat so they can clean up, this can be a negative of having an eat-in kitchen.

When you are thinking about your remodel, think about how you eat meals, the number of people who are typically present when you are eating and how much space you have in your home. These factors can help determine if a dining room or eat-in is right for your family.
