How Do You Install A Walk-In Tub

How Do You Install A Walk-In Tub?

Installing a walk-in tub in your bathroom does not have to be a big headache. The team at Cavalier Builders can help you with your install and even give you a few tips on what walk-in tub is best for you. If you have been shopping around and found a few models that interest you, give us a call. We would be happy to talk to you about the install process and help you with your home improvement project.

Walk-in Tub Install

No two bathrooms are the same, and most homeowners will have specific questions and concerns about their home and their install. This how-to guide is just a basic of how the installation process works.

Removing Existing Tub and Shower

The first thing that needs to be done is that shower and tub will need to be removed. Typically this involves using a sawzall to cut the bathtub liner and tub into manageable pieces that can easily be removed from your home. Your facet and any showerheads and glass doors you may have will also be removed during this process.

Electrical Lines

Most walk-in tubs will need an electrical line to operate, and your installer will need to run one. This is done by located an existing outlet on the wall adjacent to the tub. A new line can be run, and a GFI outlet is mounted to the motor of the walk-in tub. GFI outlets are used because they have a surge protector and are for your safety around water.

Prep Water and Drain Lines

The next step is making sure the water is turned off so the water and drain lines can be prepped for your new walk-in tub. This involves removing the existing connection to the tub and adding a new water connection. Next is turning the water back on and testing the connection. You may not need new water and drain lines, depending on your tub install. This is something you can discuss with your installer.

New Sheetrock

If you had an existing tub and shower that was one piece, you might have to get new sheetrock installed around the opening to make the walls and ceiling flush. Typically shower wallboards will be installed as this helps protect walls from the water.

Bring in the Tub

Putting the tub in place is not as challenging as it looks. Once the tub has been set in place, it can be leveled using the leveling legs. The tub will be checked from left to right, corner to corner, and front to back to make sure it is perfectly level.

Finishing Touches

Once the new tub has been installed and level, it is time for the finishing touches. This can differ depending on your tub needs, but this can include installing trim on the walls and around the tub, caulking and sealing all the joints, and cleaning the tub.

Checking the Work

You should request a test run after your installer has put everything together and did the finishing touches. This means the installer fills the tub with water and drains it to make sure everything is working correctly. They should also show you how to operate your new walk-in tub and help with any questions you may have about your new bathroom

Tips

When you are getting a walk-in tub installed in your home, do not be afraid to ask your installer questions. Make sure they test your new tuba and drains and that it is working correctly. They should also demonstrate how the new tub works for you.

  • Electrical and Lighting
  • Tile
  • Plumbing
  • Backsplash

We are here to help make your vision a reality. Below are some reasons that you may consider remodeling your kitchen and staying in the house you’re already in.

1. Increase Your Space

Sometimes the problem isn’t in the actual square footage of your kitchen space, but is actually how you are using that space. Outdated structures and designs can crowd your space, making you feel overwhelmed with lack of storage and clutter. Our professional remodelers are able to take the space you already have available in your current kitchen and offer you ideas of how to take advantage of every inch.

It might amaze you to realize how simple it is to remove and relocate cabinets, take down walls, eliminate unnecessary closets, and relocate appliances that offer practical solutions to increasing your kitchen area significantly. Remodeling also gives you an opportunity to re-evaluate how much storage space you actually need. When you have the proper amount of storage space, you can reduce clutter which will help you to achieve the clean and spacious kitchen design you are looking for.

2. Upgrade Appliances

A kitchen remodeling is a great opportunity to inspect your appliances and give them a much needed upgrade. As appliances get older, they can increase your energy bills and can even become serious safety concerns such as fire hazards or electric shocks. Upgrading your appliances will not only offer you a contemporary look and avoid unnecessary mishaps, but will also give you the added benefit of taking advantage of modern technology such as energy-efficient appliances. Energy efficient appliances will improve your home’s energy efficiency which keeps more money in your pockets in the long run.

3. Personalize Your Space

You deserve to have a space you love. Remodeling your kitchen allows you to put your personal touch on the room in your house that you spend a great deal of time in. Going through a kitchen remodel is an incredibly exciting experience that allows you to explore a variety of  tile, cabinet, appliance, and countertop designs, and choose the one you love. Your kitchen is one of the most important rooms in your home and you should love the way it looks and feels.

4. Getting Ready to Sell

It’s no secret, kitchen spaces are one of the most sought out features that house seekers are looking at. With an upgraded kitchen, you’re creating a more appealing space for buyers.  Additionally, this allows you to sell at a higher price and recover a majority of the costs from renovating your kitchen. Often kitchens become a major deal breaker when trying to sell your home, so you want to be sure that you are paying attention to the trends and consumer preferences.

What Are The Benefits Of Installing A Walk in Tub

What Are The Benefits Of Installing A Walk in Tub

What are the Benefits of Installing a Walk-In Tub?

If you have mobility issues, you may have thought about having a walk-in tub installed in your bathroom. This can help make your bathing time safer, more comfortable, and also therapeutic. There are many benefits to having a walk-in tub in your home, and there are also a few disadvantages; here at Cavalier Builders, we want to make you aware of the benefits and help you decide if a walk-in tub is something that could help you in your home.

What is a walk-in tub?

You may not have heard of a walk-in tub before, and that is okay. A walk-in tub is a bathtub with a water-tight door, allowing the bather to step into the tub over a shallow threshold. It can increase the safety of the bather while getting in the bath. The door then closes, and the tub fills with water. After the tub has drained, you can open the door and step out easily and comfortably.

There are several different makes and models of walk-in tubs, and they can meet the needs of most anyone. While you can get some taller tubs and some wider, it often depends on the space you have in your home for one. Our team would be glad to help you in deciding what the best fit for your bathroom is.

Benefits of a Walk-In Tub

Bathing can be difficult the older you get and even for adults and children with disabilities. Getting in and out of a traditional tub can also be unsafe and uncomfortable. However, a walk-in tub can make bathing easier and safer for you. Here are some of the benefits that can come when you have a walk-in tub installed in your home.

Safety Benefits

When you have a walk-in tub, they are safer than a traditional tub. With the design, you can walk over a small threshold and sit in the tub easily. This makes the chance of slipping and falling less than with a traditional tub. Walk-in tubs also have many safety features attached to make the transition easier. Most have safety bars installed, anti-scald valves, slip-resistant flooring, and built-in seating. Some tubs are even equipped with more safety features such as safety switches and self-cleaning systems, which can help with mold and bacteria growth.

Comfort Benefits

There is nothing like a walk-in tub when it comes to comfort, especially if you have trouble standing in the shower for extended periods. Walk-in tubs allow for easy access and will enable you to sit comfortably. The deeper water levels make cleaning your upper body a breeze. Some walk-in tubs can even have extra features to make it feel more like a spa, such as heated seats and even sound systems.

Health Benefits

When it comes to health benefits, the walk-in tub has several. They make bathing safe and convenient and can improve your overall health. If you are suffering from arthritis, diabetes, or muscle pain, you can benefit from the soothing effects of a walk-in tub. The walk-in tub can also help improve circulation, leading to increased mobility and less pain when you are mobile. Walk-in tubs also offer you peace of mind when you are relaxing and know you can get in and out yourself without the worry of falling and getting hurt.

Does Remodeling help the value of your property.

Does Remodeling Help The Property Value Of A Home?

Home renovations are a great way for you to both increase the functionality of your home, and enhance the beauty of your home. When you select the right project to enhance your living space, you can pass on a large part of the expenditure to the future owners of your home through increased property values. Remodeling is a way to boost your return on investment.   Items such as decks, window replacements, kitchen and bathroom upgrades are the most popular renovations that offer the greatest return on investment.

What to Consider Before Undergoing Renovations

The return on investment (ROI) of any project is dependent on the local market characteristics, what the condition of the real estate market surrounding your property is, and the quality of the work being done. Upgrading and replacing windows offer the greatest return on your investment regardless of the property market or location of your home. You must consider the reasoning behind your remodeling project. If it is not correcting a structural issue or design flaw, you’re not likely to earn more back than the cost of your construction. However, sometimes cost recovery is not as important as the added enjoyment of increased functionality and beauty of your home.

If you’re an investor remodeling your rental property, the goal is to recover the cost through increased sale price or rental rates. Caution should be used to make sure the project you’re paying for will be renovations that future renters or buyers are willing to pay for.

Location, Location, Location

Your property’s location is a vital consideration. Your renovations should be appropriate for the type of residence and the local property area. Identify comparable homes within your property’s market to make sure you’re not making the mistake of upgrading your home well above average for similar homes within your area.  Buyers are seeking homes in areas that offer added convenience, such as shops, schools systems, and of course homes that are within their price range. So even though you may make improvements that outshine the homes around you, you’re unlikely to make a desirable profit and buyers may even seek other properties because they’re at a better price-point.

Geography will also have an influence on the quickest or greatest payback from projects. For example, the maintenance time and cost of in-ground swimming pools make it extremely difficult to recover the cost of installation, and in some cases they reduce the overall value of your home. However, this may not be the case in the southern regions of the U.S., where they experience longer seasons of extremely hot weather therefore making swimming pools a valuable and sought out addition for your property.

Consider Effects of Time

Time is an additional factor to consider as it will also have an impact on your renovation’s ability to boost property values. Structural or design improvements, such as building an addition or completing unfinished space, can add value for a greater amount of time when compared to renovating kitchens and bathrooms or making technological improvements such as adding a new air conditioning system. Upgrades such as kitchens and bathrooms will decline with time as trends change, and HVAC systems will at some point approach their end of life and need to be repaired or even replaced again.

Project Returns on Investment

The decisive reason to undergo any renovation project is the enjoyment you receive from the upgrades you make to your home. This includes both the enjoyment of a more functional and appealing space as well as the previously discussed benefits of putting money back in your pocket down the road. There are a variety of resources available that offer insight when you’re in the early stages of planning your renovations.

The bottom line is, that you should be aware of the costs versus the values they offer.  If your end goal is to sell your home within the foreseeable future, you will need to be more sensitive to your ability to recover from the cost of your renovation.  Not looking to sell or rent, but just looking to enjoy increasing your home’s beauty and functionality, you’re likely to not stress as much over the return on your investment.  Whatever your desire is, Cavalier Builders is here to help. Contact us today to get started on your home renovation project in Los Angeles and surrounding areas.

Can I Add A Garage To My Home?

A white picket fence, a two car garage, a dog and some children sounds like every American’s dream. However, finding a house in this current market has become quite the challenge as properties are selling within hours of being listed. You may consider making an addition to your current home or adding to a home that is not exactly what you are looking for. Simply adding a room or even a garage to a home changes the whole look of the house. Garages not only add storage room but curb appeal.

5 Things to Consider When Adding A Garage To Your Home?

When considering adding a garage to your home there are several things you may want to consider. Lumber prices have also skyrocketed this year and are now starting to return to more reasonable prices. This will make your project more affordable than it would’ve been six months ago. Here are some other things to think about when contemplating adding a garage:

    1. How Large- There are so many options when it comes to adding a garage to a home. You may be extending a single car garage into a two-car garage. You may consider adding a two story garage to your home and adding additional living space. Make sure you are giving yourself enough space for your vehicle and some storage. Cars are being made larger and larger now.
    2. Zoning Regulations– Before you begin building the garage of your dreams it’s crucial to make sure you are able to obtain all the necessary building and zoning documentation. You would be surprised to know how many construction jobs are held up because of zoning issues. Most areas require a certain number of feet from the street and the perimeter of your property. Zoning personnel may also have specific requirements when it comes to building materials and drainage rules. There are certain cases where regulations may be challenged so it is worthy of research.
  • Build It Yourself or Hire A Contractor- In the generation of “Do-It-Yourselfers”  you may find yourself up for the task of taking on your own garage addition. After learning all your zoning requirements and building codes you will probably start choosing your materials. You may consider selecting materials that match the existing design found throughout your home to create a nice flow. Other factors like budget or a change of style may however steer you away from doing so. Depending on how much of the work you can do yourself you will likely have to hire a reputable contractor to do special jobs like pouring concrete or electrical work. Finding a trained, licensed, and certified contractor is essential to get good work done.
    1. Attached or Unattached– There are many pros and cons when considering this situation. It is often easier and more affordable to build onto your home. Choosing an attached garage will give you more security and keep you out of the elements as much. A detached garage keeps garage noise and garage items further from the home. Depending on what types of activities you are planning on doing in your garage, a rock band or woodshop, you may prefer to have it further from the home.
  • Driveway-  One of the last things you may want to consider when adding on a garage is the driveway. You can get creative with your driveway and use it to enhance the curb appeal of your home. Whether you simply add new landscaping around the area or you are extending it to create a two-car driveway you can use various materials. Paver, and stamped concrete create a more expensive look than traditional concrete. Driveways take up a lot of space and range anywhere from 10-24 feet wide.

Simple Kitchen Updates That Make A Huge Difference

Kitchen remodeling and updating is a costly process to go through. Sometimes you want to make some changes, but not break the bank. Cavalier Builders can help you make some fun and exciting changes at an affordable cost. Throughout this article, we will discuss some simple updates that you can make to make a huge difference in your home.

Install or Redo Your Backsplash

Want to make a statement in your kitchen? Then you need to think about installing or changing your backsplash. This area is a perfect place to be bold and creative. It can make a huge difference in any kitchen.

Bold, vibrant, and fun patterns or designs can make this space look like a whole new area. You can make a big difference in the kitchen with the backsplash that you choose. Whether you are trying to create a larger appearance or a brighter look, your backsplash can make the difference.

Redo Your Countertops

The countertops in your kitchen are a relatively simple change to make. Over the years, styles evolve, and countertops need replacing. Whether it is due to age or a design change, this is a great way to make a big difference.

A full remodel and construction is not always needed to make a space new and revived. Find a few things throughout the room that you want to improve and do it. There are so many fun styles to choose from when it comes to your countertops.

Change Out Your Hardware

The hardware in your kitchen will wear out over time or become a style of the past. The hardware choices that you have can easily be swapped out for a new look. It is a quick and straightforward way to make a difference in your kitchen.

The hardware can mean anything from the knobs on drawers, pulls on cabinets, knobs on doors, and even the sink faucet. Styles change over the years, and you may update the color scheme in your kitchen. Replacing the hardware with an updated and fresh appearance can make the space feel a hundred times better.

Paint Your Cabinets

Are your cabinets dark, old, or just not what you want anymore? Completely replacing your cabinets is not always in the budget, but painting them might be. If your cabinets are still in pretty good condition, but you just want a color change, try painting them.

There is a paint specifically designed to paint kitchen cabinets and many tutorials of how to do this yourself. It can be a time-consuming job. It is probably best to hire someone to do this for you, as if done incorrectly, you may not be satisfied with the results.

Put In A New Sink

Differences can be made pretty simply in the kitchen with some small steps. The kitchen sink is a common area in the room. That means that you can make a statement with the kitchen sink that you choose.

When looking at your kitchen, do you love your sink? If not, make some changes. There are some beautiful, unique, and gorgeous sinks that you can put in to make some changes. You don’t have to gut the entire area to get a fun new look in our kitchen.

How Can Lighting In Your Home Make A Difference?

Are you looking for advice on lighting for your home? The placement and type of lights that you use in your home can make a big difference. It depends on the room that you are working on for how much it matters as well. Cavalier Builders in Woodland Hills, CA, is a wonderful company that can help you with the advice that you are needing. Let’s discuss some of the important points about lighting in your home.

In The Bathroom

The bathroom is one of the most important spaces in the home that people like to have really good lighting in. This can be done with overhead lighting such as canned lights or with wall-mounted lights. A smaller bathroom typically takes 40 watts, and a larger master bathroom takes 100 watts.

The mirror is used in the bathroom to brush teeth, fix hair, put on makeup, plucking unwanted hairs, and more. All of those tasks are preferred to be done in a bathroom that has good lighting. It is recommended that the lighting that is chosen is near or around the mirror.

In The Kitchen

Kitchen lighting is very important, and typically people want it to be bright. You spend a lot of time in the kitchen cooking and reading recipes. You want to be able to see what you are reading. A typical installation in kitchens is can lighting and strip lights.

The can lighting allows you to pretty much place lights wherever you want to. You can have as many or as little as you want. Underneath the cabinets, lighting is another popular installation that people have done. When you are prepping meals and following directions, good lighting is a must.

In The Living Room

The living room is an area that families spend a lot of time in. This area is not usually as popular with bright lighting. It is more subtle compared to the kitchen and bathroom areas. Canned lighting is popular to give proper lighting to specific areas of the room. Many homeowners place lamps on side tables and standing lamps in corners to add additional lighting if needed.

Many people choose to have adjustable lighting or dimming lights in the living room. That way, if you are playing card games or reading a book, you can have adequate lighting, but if you are not you can dim them lower. The height of the ceiling will help decipher what type of lighting you need as well.

In The Bedroom

Lighting in the bedroom is usually done with an overhead light fixture and fan. This can be accompanied by canned lighting, or people may choose to have only canned lighting. It is a personal opinion and made based on the amount of lighting you want in your bedroom.

This area is similar to the living room area. There are often lamps on nightstands, and there isn’t as much need for bright lights. You still want enough lighting to not struggle with it being too dark to read or do everyday tasks. Canned lighting placed around the perimeter of your room is popular and makes the right amount of lighting for a bedroom.

4 Ways You Can Remodel A Small Bathroom

Are you trying to think about ways that you can remodel your small bathroom? It can be hard to envision different styles and designs when there isn’t much room to work with. Cavalier Builders has helped many people in the Los Angeles, CA community. Our general contractors can help you develop a great plan to make your bathroom just what you need.

Types of Remodeling

There are many different ways that you can look at remodeling. It could mean that you are simply changing around some colors and designs. Then it could mean some more in-depth procedures to adjust the size and layout of it completely.

When you have a small bathroom, it can be challenging to make it all work. You may feel there isn’t enough room or that the flow isn’t quite right. There are many ideas and tricks that you can do to make a small bathroom feel bigger and have a more appealing look for you.

1. Choose A More Fitting Vanity

The vanity size, shape, and design can make or break a small bathroom. There isn’t much room in there, to begin with, so choosing the right one can make a difference. Think about the size of the bathroom and ways that you can maximize the space in there.

One of the best ways to better use a small space is to choose a vanity with lots of storage options. Another tip is to choose rounded edges; sharp or harsh corners can be a problem in tight spaces. You can also look into corner designs; they take up far less space and still look great.

2. Choose Patterns, Designs, and Colors Wisely

The patterns, designs, and colors that you put into a small space are a big decision. Dark colors can make a small space feel even smaller. That doesn’t mean that you can’t use dark colors. You just have to be creative with them.

Patterns are a great idea for small spaces, believe it or not. Choosing bold and large patterns can make a space seem larger than it is. Fun and funky floor tiles or wallpaper can spice up a small bathroom. Another great tip is to lay tiles in unique patterns to create fun designs.

3. Use Wall Space

When you have limited space to work with, you have to be creative with the space that you do have. The wall space is a great way to help draw the eye up instead of side to side. This can help to disguise the small area and make it feel bigger.

You can do this by hanging plants and other decorations up high and at various heights. Shelving is a good way to draw the eyes up and maximize space. The shelves can be used for needed space as well. The style and decor that you choose can help it feel like a cozy place instead of a cramped bathroom.

4. Install A Pocket Door

If your small bathroom doesn’t already have a pocket door, you should consider it. When you are already dealing with a small space, the last thing you need is the door taking up extra space. A pocket door can give you the privacy you need with the space-saving qualities you are looking for.

garage conversion

Garage Conversion: Things To Consider Before Starting

If you find yourself desiring more space in your home, a garage conversion is definitely something worth considering. However, there is much to consider before making the decision to convert your garage into a living space and Cavalier Builders is here to help. It’s important to weigh all your options before deciding to convert your garage.

Why You Should Consider Converting Your Garage

When you feel as though your home has gotten a bit crammed, a garage conversion is a desirable option to enhance your space. When property values are low and expansion would be difficult and costly, this is a sensible option. There are also some potential downsides to a conversion. The decision to move forward with your conversion should be made carefully. It’s important to weigh out potential options and possible drawbacks.

Things to Consider Before Starting Your Project

A conversion doesn’t always add value to your home according to experts. It also depends on where you live. If your plan is to sell your home in the near future, a garage conversion probably isn’t for you. If your home is located in an area prone to adverse weather, a garage is usually something potential buyers are looking for. Take a look around the comparable homes in your neighborhood, if the majority of the homes have a garage then this is most likely a sought after feature. Converting your garage would decrease your chances of attracting multiple buyers.

However, if you are located somewhere that greatly values square footage then the decision to convert your garage could potentially increase the value of your property. If you feel as though you are in the home you plan to live in forever then value and attracting buyers is of no concern to you. You may find a conversion worthwhile.

3 Reasons You Need to Consider the Costs?

  1. Price ranges vary depending on the details of your preferences. The average garage conversion can cost anywhere from $8,000 to $25,000. Two of the biggest variables are the electrical and plumbing work. If you’re lucky, your garage will already have the electrical wired and may just need some upgrading. Costs can increase drastically once you start adding breakers to meet the requirements for your home. Your garage likely has a single light circuit and may need more outlets and receptacles for basic living conditions.
  2. Plumbing can be a rather large expenditure depending on how you want to use your new space.  Adding a complete living space with a bathroom, shower, and space for cooking and cleaning will cost far more than just adding a half bathroom. Expect your plumbing installation to cost around $1,000 to $2,500.
  3. Don’t forget about your garage door. You will need to remove your existing garage door if you plan to maintain temperature comfort. Garage doors let in cold and heat making a living space uncomfortable in the peak months of summer and winter. Therefore you’ll probably want to have your space included into your HVAC system. Additionally, consider insulation, walls, floors, and ceilings.

Permits and Laws

You will want to be sure to do your research and check local regulations to determine what permits are needed to convert your garage into a living space. Permits will likely be needed and can cost between $3,000 to $1,000. Of course, this will depend on where you live and the estimated cost of your project. In addition to permits, adding square footage to your home can increase your taxable square footage, especially if you’re in an area with high property taxes.

Ready to Move Forward

If you’ve decided that converting your garage is the right move for you, call Cavalier Builders today and we can help you get the process started. Contact us at any of our locations in La Mirada, Hidden Hills, LA, and Woodland Hills CA at (866) 358-6385.

update your kitchen

3 Top Things Everyone Should Do To Update Their Kitchen

The kitchen is the heart of the home and most families spend many hours cooking and eating in their kitchens. Having a kitchen you love is so important, and whether you do simple updates or completely gut and redo a kitchen, having it look how you want can make you so happy. Not only is it good for your mental health, but the updates you make in a kitchen usually give a great return on the value.

1. Overhaul Cabinets

Updating cabinets in some way has probably the largest visible impact in a kitchen, as they take up so much space and are very visible from many angles. You can get all new cabinets, paint the existing ones you have, or even just get new doors for a fresh new look. You don’t have to spend a fortune to improve your cabinets, and just putting a layer of paint on them can make them look like new without having to replace them.

Adding in crown molding, painting the upper cabinets a different color from the bottom, and even painting or replacing cabinet hardware are all some inexpensive updates that many people can do themselves. Changing the type of hardware you have can make a huge impact as well- changing pulls to knobs or knobs to pulls can also help affect the look of your whole kitchen. You can match all the finishes of the metals or choose to have different finishes, like having an oil-rubbed bronze faucet and brushed nickel drawer pulls.

2. Update Countertops

Updating countertops can be an inexpensive or expensive venture, depending on many factors like materials and the extensiveness of the project. If you’re looking for an update that isn’t permanent, is cheap, and will have a huge impact on the space, you may want to consider using contact paper to cover your existing countertops. Not only will it update the look, but can update the functionality as it is a new, clean, smooth surface.

Completely replacing countertops can completely change the look of the room, and there are less expensive options like butcher block or even concrete. Many do-it-yourselfers decide to make concrete countertops themselves by adding a finish onto their current countertops, which can save so much money. If you’re looking to completely replace your countertops, you can often find granite remnants for a good price.

3. Add in Some Tile

Adding in a fun tile on the backsplash or floor is a great way to add in some personality to a kitchen. Ceramic tile is great for backsplashes, but porcelain tile is a better choice for floors, as it resists chipping and cracking better than ceramic. Using a larger tile for the kitchen floor can be a better choice for a homeowner installing it themselves, as it requires less cutting and grout lines.

Choosing in timeless styles like white subway tile can provide a good return on your investment, as the look of the tile won’t be out of style as quickly as some more trendy tiles. Choosing natural colored and neutral tile is also a good idea, as when you go to sell your house, you’re appealing to a wider variety of house hunters.
